The UBCDS Executive elections and our annual flagship inhouse, the Challenge Cup, will be held in March.

Elections: Tuesday, March 10th, at our regular 5pm meeting.
Challenge Cup: Saturday, March 28, time to be announced.

We welcome all our members to come out to these events!

The UBCDS Closing of the House has also been tentatively set for Tuesday, March 31st.

The UBCDS welcomes back all its members - and any new ones! - for January meetings.

We have changed rooms for the new semester and will now meet on:

• Tuesdays at 5pm in Buchanan D307 and
• Fridays at 4pm in Buchanan D219.

We're also having a welcome-back social (dinner and bowling!) on Friday, January 16th after the regular Friday meeting. Come on out and have fun with the club!

The UBCDS is now accepting applications for the Calgary Fall Open, happening Oct 17 - 19 at the University of Calgary.

This tournament will feature the Society's largest contingent of this year, a bus of 47 debaters. We leave at 10pm on Thursday, Oct 16th and return late Sunday night (or early Monday morning). The cost per person is $25 to cover travel and accommodations, and $50 tournament registration fee ($25 for judges), plus any food and drink costs throughout the weekend. All debaters are encouraged to come out for this tournament!

The UBCDS High School tournament resolutions have been released. They are as follows:

Junior:

• BIRT video cameras should be allowed in courtrooms to televise criminal trials.
• BIRT private schools should be banned.

Senior:

• THBT the US should focus on developing its domestic oil reserves.

Each team in an age division will debate each resolution once on Affirmative/Government and once on Negative/Opposition. Juniors will have an additional one round of impromptu debate, while Seniors will have three rounds of impromptu.

Registration fees for the tournament have also dropped $5 per team, and are now $60 per team. The UBCDS would like to welcome the UBC Faculty of Science and Faculty of Law as sponsors and thank them for making this possible!

Registration for the UBCDS High School Tournament closes at noon on Friday, Oct 10th. Any questions about the tournament should be directed to the TD and Registration team at highschools2008©gmail.com.
